The Father of Lies

Adolph Hitler once said, “If you tell a big enough lie and tell it frequently enough, it will be believed.” It might likewise be the case that we’re getting closer to the return of Christ because lying seems to be the preponderant thing these days. I’ve heard more lies and uncovered more deceptions in the past few years than in my lifetime prior. We have governments lying to us. We have deceptive advertising, bad actors on the internet, the media, and even our friends ignorantly reposting blatant false memes all in the name of fun.

If you’re paying attention, lies are becoming more sophisticated with the advent of AI and deep fakes. So much so that the Department of Homeland Security has a division dedicated  to “misinformation.” But can we even believe them? What is misinformation in a partisan government? To me, it’s information designed to deceive. But they, of course, see it differently. It can be information they deam harmful to their goals. Not necessarily blatant lies but information they censure or condem. This process can have severe psychological effects and serve to change behaviors. So, to denounce something is to condemn it. Who cares as long as it serves a greater purpose? Information has morphed into lying. The Bible talks about sin and law in a similar way. “For sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me.” (Romans 7:11, ESV)

I woke up this morning thinking about what Jesus said about Satan. Speaking to a group of Jews, Jesus says, “You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies” (John 8:44).

Has the world given in to its father? Is his power now so great that it is almost impossible to decern truth? Remember, it all began when Satan directly contradicts God and says to Eve, “You shall surely not die if you eat the fruit!” And so beit that a woman propagated the lie, but that’s for another story, lol. Anyway, the lie didn’t work out well for Eve, Adam, or all of us, did it?

Satan’s most effective weapon is lies. Up to this point, he’s been burning coal, but it now seems he’s gone thermonuclear. With the advent of technology, his lies can spread at lightning  speed. Maybe Satan created the internet? On second thought, surely he did!  Al Gore certainly lied about being its author.

It’s Sunday, so I’ll not labor any further. You probably already know Satan’s scheme. I just want to remind you that the Father of Lies uses many forms to deceive us. Be careful what you believe. Put on your armor, and filter everything through the Holy Spirit. And if you don’t know Jesus humbly bow before him and ask him into your heart. Only from there, you can “know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:32.
