Things are Getting Weird

The scenery is lush. The grounds of this manufactured city are filled with fruit filled plams, a vast variety of flowers, lighted foliage, modern sculptures, and artificial grass. It is all so beautiful and surreal. The unconscious mind is the usual wellhead of my imagination. But the fantasy I’m seeing now is more than a shadow.

Do you remember seeing the original 1960’s movie, The Time Machine? Towards the end of the movie, George finds his way to the year 802,701 A.d.  He finds his beloved London to be transformed into a lush Eden, much like I’m experiencing more and more in my travels.  Idyllic  communities are springing up across America. These trendy master planned communities are considered visionary building blocks to the future. I agree they are practical and beautiful, but they scare me, too.

More and more seers say we are heading towards a society where we work very little, where AI and robots will bear our burdens, and universal stipends will be handed out to keep the masses in line. Will we, also, be like the Eloi in The Time Machine? Will all our needs be someday provided for? Will we be fed our meals or graze like cattle on insects and gluten-free grains? Will we, because we have no struggles, no needs, lack curiosity, wander about like somnambulists; like the docile Eloi? Worse yet, are we destined to be herded into subterranean caves to be exploited and consumed by the Morlocks?

That’s way too far out there, Bob, you say. Is it? Is the gist of Soilent Green not becoming an ever closer possibility? Were we not herded into getting our Covid shots when the siren sounded? Many say Covid was just a trial run.

The whole point of H.G. Wells book was to show us what could happen if we separate the haves from the have not’s; how the distinction leads to the bifurcation and  devolution of humankind and this led to the creation of the Morlocks and Eloi.

But now, to leave the fantasy behind. Is it not possible that fallen man’s schemes could make such plans? Have you ever read articles by the World Economic Forum? Do not some wish the atrophied state of melancholy upon society? For the unlearned, this is socialism! Who is it that wishes for the reduction of populations and sacrifices of humans for the sake of the planet, translated – surpreme powers? H.G. Wells was fittingly both a hard atheist and a socialist, and he wrote extensively on the need for a “One World Government?” Am I making sense yet? Isn’t fantasy closer to reality than we think? All this because I’m seeing more of what I call communist housing developments and “Master Planned Communities.”

Why is this happening? Maybe more and more people are uninterested in the struggles and blessings of everyday life? They’re developing apathy, indifference, and a sense of entitlement. These communities,  I fear, will devolve like most social experiments, into blasé out of touch, sanctioned encampments if you will, till the next great idea comes along to keep the proletariat (working class) invested in the status quo.

Wells, got one more thing very wrong. He saw these things happening way out into the future. I’m afraid they’re happening now.
